Student Learning & Development (SLD)

Throughout my time at IU, I have intentionally grounded my work in student development theory and its practical application within student affairs. From the beginning of my graduate program, I was challenged to move beyond intuition and consider how theory informs everyday practices in my assistantship. I have come to understand that students experience college in vastly different ways based on their identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences. As a result, applying developmental and learning theories has allowed me to approach my work with greater intentionality, cultural awareness, and responsiveness. These frameworks guide how I support, challenge, and advocate for students, ensuring that my practice promotes not only academic success but also personal growth and identity development. Over time, theory has become embedded in how I think, plan, and engage with students, while sometimes consciously, and sometimes instinctively. Ultimately, this competency has reinforced my belief that student affairs work is about fostering holistic development and supporting students as whole people, preparing them not just to succeed in college, but to thrive beyond it.
