Professional Competencies

The ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies for Student Affairs Educators have served as a foundational framework for my growth as an emerging student affairs professional. Through the intentional and reflective application of these competencies in both my roles as a graduate assistant and a master’s student, I have gained the critical tools, knowledge, and confidence necessary to grow with purpose and effectiveness within the field of student affairs. These competencies have not only shaped my professional identity but have also provided structure and direction for my learning, practice, and development. While all ten competencies are essential to holistic professional growth, I will focus on four specific areas that most clearly represent where I have experienced the greatest growth and transformation as a practitioner, guided by the standards set forth by ACPA and NASPA.

NASPA Professional Competencies

Leadership (LEAD)

"Leadership involves both the individual role of a leader and the leadership process of individuals working together to envision, plan, and affect change in organizations and respond to broad-based constituencies and issues".

Advising & Supporting (A/S)

"Through developing advising and supporting strategies that take into account self-knowledge and the needs of others, we play critical roles in advancing holistic wellness of ourselves, our students, and our colleagues".

Student Learning & Development (SLD)

"This competency area addresses the concepts and principles of student development and learning theory. This includes the ability to apply theory to improve and inform student affairs and teaching practices".

Personal & Ethical Foundations (PEF)

"Personal and ethical foundations are aligned because integrity has an internal locus informed by a combination of external ethical guidelines, an internal voice of care, and our own lived experiences".
